Photos of Ghost Towns
The American southwest is full of ghost towns. They are especially common in old mining areas. Mineral deposits are extremely fickle. The come and go, veins of valuable ore narrow out and vanish. They encourage speculation because it sounds like easy money and you never know if you will strike it rich with the next shovel of dirt.
Discovery of valuable minerals was followed by a boom time when people rushed to make their fortune. When the mines ran out everyone left. The result was a ghost town.
Since these towns were lawless and violent places there was never a shortage of death and tradegy from which ghost stories would arise. They are fun to re-tell and writers love to include them.
This website displays only a few of our collection of ghost town pictures. At Walking Rain Gallery we have more, as well as many pictures of other subjects. Clicking links on this site will take you to the ghost town category of Walking Rain Gallery.
